Youth Forum with the Senators

The University of the Philippines School of Economics Student Council (SESC), New Gen, an institutional advocacy of PUBLICUS Co. Ltd. and the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Center for Leadership , and the Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng Paaralang Ateneo de Manila, will host what might possibly be this year’s largest youth forum – Senate Inquiries: A Look into the Pertinent Issues of the Youth with the Senators - scheduled on August 17, 2007 at 4:30-7:30 pm in the Henry Lee Irwin Theatre in the Ateneo de Manila University along Katipunan Road, Quezon City. SESC, New Gen, and Sanggunian are also working with youth groups and organizations such as the Ateneo School of Government, Simbahang Lingkod Bayan, Citizens of Good Example, and Bantay Pangako to make this forum a widely participated event.

New Gen instigates social change by giving training seminars all over the country to encourage the youth to participate in the country’s political reform. SESC and Sanggunian, on the other hand, commit itself to empowering the youth and encouraging them to take an active role in nation building.

Hosting the Forum is a daring effort for SESC, New Gen, Sanggunian and their partner groups to instill meaningful political reform by providing a venue for academic dialogue between students and distinguished government officials.

Programme

The programme is divided into three segments facilitated by Professor Solita Monsod. The first segment consists of general questions to the senators on the state of Philippine Education, human rights violations and the Human Security Act, challenges and opportunities for economic growth and development, and youth empowerment programs. Questions from the youth panelists, Shahana Abdulwahid, University Student Council Chairperson, Mong Palatino, Kabataan Party List president, Karl Satinigan, Ateneo Sanggunian Chairperson, Levie Cequena of New Gen, and Cody Rabe of the Ateneo School of Government comprise the second segment. Participants can ask questions for the open forum at the end of the programme by writing their questions on pieces of paper to be distributed during registration and giving it to the ushers at the side throughout the forum. This will be read out by the open forum moderators from the UP Diliman University Student Council (Vice Chairperson Viktor Fontanilla and Councilor Third Bagro) and from Ateneo Sanggunian (Angie Lusuan and Cheenee Otarra) for the third segment

ACceLErate our fight for our Rights: USC holds semestra ACLE

The University Student Council (USC) recently organized the Alternative Classroom Learning Experience entitled "ACceLErate our fight for our rights: Defy Conventions, Serve the People" last September 4, Tuesday, 1 to 5pm. Students flocked and attended the alternative classes organized by different organizations, fraternities, sororities, and alliances in UP. With seminars, film viewing, academic forums, as well as talks with famous personalities, ACLE proves that learning is not limited to the daily grind of academic life.

Three members of the School of Economics Advisory Council organized their own ACLE. UP Economics Society held an ACLE on events management; UP Economics Towards Consciousness on the Economics of Rallies; while UP Organization of Business Economics Majors held an ACLE on students and the stock market.

ACLE is spearheaded by the Education and Research Committee led by Bang Dizon, College of Arts and Letters Representative.
